LOOM
LOOM is a modular browser instrument that combines granular sound design, patch routing, and sequencing in one playable surface.
The challenge was to keep a flexible sound engine understandable while it was being played. Sequencing, synthesis, granular playback, effects, and output all needed to work together without hiding the signal path from the performer.
Source material and note events enter a browser-local audio graph. Visible connections route control and audio between modules, while the output path feeds performance feedback and the speakers.
The key engineering choice is explicit routing. Named input and output jacks and on-screen cables keep the signal path inspectable and editable, while timing and sound generation stay close to the interface in the browser.
If browser audio has not been activated, the patch remains visible and editable but silent. Activation can be retried from the instrument without losing the visible rack.
