Don’t Come Around.

I’ve been writing tracks like this for a number of years and still do. This one I especially liked, or do like, which in my world fluctuates. Hot off the press, then three weeks later it’s shit. Or make it, hate it, shelve it, come back three years on and think, who’s this by, it’s banging. Then find out it’s mine.

I was painting a lot when I made these. There’s a bunch of them in this style, heavily influenced by future garage and people like Four Tet and Burial. For me they’re sombre but hopeful, spacey, with a fairly fast beat. 132.5 seemed to be where I was at. The part I enjoy most is the drums and percussion. I was sampling a lot of outside noise and foley then, layering slowed-down rain and static, making long reverb freezes and looping them.

It’s not about anything in particular. Like all my music it’s written to capture a feeling, a vibe maybe, or an essence.

I’ve never been much into self-canonisation, or promoting. It felt like it took the love out of it. Making things for people that they wanted felt, not sell-out, but somehow derivative of the form, and trying to promote against the millions of other people trying to make it in music seemed futile. Mostly I just like the process. It’s the same with most of what I do, orchestration, development, the rest. There’s always the worry that when the thing you love becomes the thing you need to make money from, it gets pressured, tainted, changed for good.

I’d never describe myself as a music producer, though I do produce music. Same as I don’t go around saying I’m a developer, though there are millions of lines of my code doing things across a distributed system.

The clips are R3N and Darkling. Many of the scenes are from a film I’m making around these characters, still in progress, so no details yet. The intention is that this, or an excerpt of it, ends up part of it.

So this is a teaser of what’s to come, and a marrying of two things that happened to meet and hit it off. They were made for each other, just at different times.
